The Passing of an Era

My grand-uncle passed away this morning. He was 88 going on to 89 years old. He was the oldest living Victorian, which means a lot to me, from the institution that I love. He was really quite something, always coming to any party or function dressed not in pyjamas as some of the elderly do, but in a suit, always a grey suit, standing as erect as he could on his close-to-a-century-old shoulders. His passing signalled the end of an era, one which we all hoped to grow up under the protection of. My sincere condolences go out to his immediate loved ones.

I went to visit him twice in Changi General Hostipal, where he reluctantly went to, after adamantly refusing to go to Singapore General Hospital, seeing that a fair number of his loved ones passed on there, including his wife. The last words I ever heard him speak was, through his incessant, involuntary shaking and his pain, "Thank you for coming to visit." Even in midst of his own plight, he remained what a Victorian was brought up to be, a gentleman. He was a tough nut to crack, staying on at all our parties til one in the morning, drinking the brandy he was so fond of. At 88, he wrote in his diary everyday, about his comings and goings and notes about people he met. He walked to the market everyday, to buy tomatoes which he so strongly attributed his good health to, apart from brandy. He was a force unstoppable, or so he seemed to me.

In short, he's everything I want to be at his age: Proud, Strong, and Gentlemanly. I'm going to miss you, Lao Ku. Rest in Peace.

Unsurprisingly, this got me thinking 'bout a lotta stuff that's happened over the past few years. It's amazing how a person is reminded of his own mortality after a life close to his fizzes out. Relative or friend, it stings and shocks, and tells you that one day, you'd be facing this scenario too. A few years back, a string on suicides involving JC students took place, and I knew one of them. Well, not really knew, but just knew his existence in the world. Be that as it may, it was shocking to see someone that young, MY age, throw himself out of a window, problems regardless. The other case was even worse, when a highly promising VJC committed suicide over personal issues. What drives people to take such drastic measures, when the termination of life represents the ending of all they know? If the ending of a life can cause such pain and sorrow, what more the tragedy surrounding it?

With all that is great and blessed by God himself, I hope the world becomes a better place.

Life as a Whole

Dear All,

It's been a while since I last posted anything, and I heartily apologise! Much has happened in the span of what, 3 weeks, and I'm seriously starting to think that life's gonna change for many people, including me, in the coming future.

First off though, my trip to Hanoi was a total total blast, and I guess I now have an inkling of what it's like to live like a king! I mean, it's not every day that you have a private butler to your hotel room, truffled omelettes for breakfast and champagne round the clock! Aside from this, the food in Vietnam is nothing short of magical, and at absurdly cheap prices too! We managed, on the last day of our trip, to rustle up some Suckling Pig and Roast Duck from a famous stall (which turned out to be a dirty-ass shop at the roadside with dirty-ass fan blowing on their Suckling Pig and Roast Duck, with a dirty-ass bucket of sauce next to it... D'oh!), and it was absolutely fantastic pork, for about US$16 for a kilo of Suckling Pig! Woah, if this was the situation in sunny S'pore, half of S'pore's Chinese population's gonna come out looking like the here for the ASEAN Sumo Wrestling Federation Championships. Vietnam's a beautiful, beautiful place, but akin to a beautiful homeless woman. If you can look past the dirt and the grime that has accumulated throughout the years, you'll see a gorgeous, tragic beauty, unique and unsurpassed.

If you guys have seen the F1 races recently, you'd have seen something to remember for a while to come. Now, I'm not an F1 fan myself, and even after having the privilege to attend the event in a corporate suite, I still can't see myself watching F1 on a regular basis, but it was interesting in its own way, I suppose. To hear engines roaring and tearing out eardrums, with vehicles speeding at up to 300km/h, it's a unique, one-of-a-kind experience that you can't find anywhere else! Apparently, due to the adrenalin, the concentration and the heat of the car, F1 drivers lose an average of 6kg every race! Woah, that's cool. Now all the Singapore government has to do is find F1 cars large enough to fit the fat, tubby kids that are increasing in multitudes all over Singapore, and watch their problems 'melt' away! =D

With so many things going on now, how does one keep track of things?! On another note, Farand Chen's going into Tekong in 9 days time, and the jabroni's actually excited! Good on you, mate! Gonna miss you!

Come tomorrow, the age of food arrives. Hope the world is ready for it! =)

Or What You Will

Everyone around me just seems to be emo recently.

Many things have happened, but most amazing thing that happened, I suppose, is that I discovered stuff about life, stuff which I knew existed but not in my reality, I guess. Small things, but big in their own way.

Friends. Friends spill out of every corner, be they boyhood chums, police buddies, mutual aquaintances, loves, family friends and what not. Some are good for casual chatting, some are meant for more, and some you just have an innate ability to trust above all else. It's not easy finding friends like that, and it's God's private gift to you that you do possess them. Thankfully, I do have a couple of them, who've stuck by, through all sorts o' stuff, rubbish or emo, serious or not. Guess this has to come out, even though this post's probably gonna be flooded with a tonne of dumb-arse comments... =) Without them, dreams are just dreams (literally), and nothing more than a passing cloud. I hope everyone reading this does try to realise a dream or two, and understand that to build on a vision, and to plan for a future, is more exhilarating and exciting than you can possibly imagine.

On another note, there are just some people in the world that you just can't understand, no matter how hard you try, and some people whom just can't understand you. I for one, cannot for the life of me understand how some people can talk trash to everyone around them, but daren't even face up to a confrontation, and wimp out at the first opportunity. It's ridiculous how a person at the bottom of the barrel can actually assume that he's the cream on top, and act as if he's worth the price of the most expensive cheese. Jeez, wake up, and smell the fart-bombs, you donut!

Sorry, there're just a couple o' types of people in the world I can't stand. And you're one of them, punk.

Colosso's out. We're ready. Give us all you got!

Miss you baby. Very very very very much! =(

Yet Another Quick Update in Our Lives

Dear all,

Must apologise, for the few people that actually know this blog exists! Given that the 3 of us are the slackest jabronis around, and that the last post was more than a month ago, I'm inclined to offer a hearty apology, and a sincere beratement to my two comrades who've yet to surface themselves on this blog in a while... Ah, I ramble.

Anyway, so so much has happened in the past month or so, that I don't think it's possible to jot it all down, given that I'm shacked out and lazy as an overweight rich boy on a luxury bed. Firstly, the dinner at Shin. That was one of the best, (local) dinners I've had this year, with perfect friends and conversation, coupled by sensational food! Never mind the fact that we spent enough money to pay all the cardinals in the Vatican to tap-dance for us. Really hope you enjoyed it, Rach! This one's for you!

Our 2nd Taste Test was by far the more daunting of the two, with a tougher, older, more critical crowd, and yet... WE SURVIVED! Glad our efforts paid off, and we got relatively, and sometimes grudgingly positive comments, with reunions with old teachers and all. Look forward to seeing you again, Ms Neo! =D
It's definitely a path worth striding on, despite the obstacles and heavy cost of taking this road.

The Dark Knight was without a doubt the best movie of the year. Sounds cliched, but Heath Ledger is really the best of them all. Hope his soul rests easy up there! Don't think there'll ever be a Joker like him, and given that Batman's been around for donkey years, that's saying something. Absolutely riveting performance, I say!

That's all for now, I guess, till next time, amigos, adios!

Don't really use this blog for this, but I'm really missing Cyn so so so much! Man, still can't understand the effect that that girl has on me! Come back soon, please! =(
